The Feb. 27 earthquake in Chile has brought many questions from Maranatha volunteers who are concerned about how the people have been affected.
“Maranatha Volunteers International has very strong ties to Seventh-day Adventist church members in Chile. Our volunteers have developed close relationships with the people they met on projects there,” says Kyle Fiess, Maranatha vice president for marketing and projects.
Nearly 1,700 people helped build 45 churches with Maranatha in Chile in 2008 and 2009. Seventh-day Adventist church leadership reports that none of those churches were damaged.
“Though we are thankful the churches were not damaged, our prayers and thoughts remain with everyone affected by the earthquake,” Fiess says.
The 8.8-magnitude earthquake was recorded as one of the most powerful in history, killing more than 720 people and affecting 1.5 million others, according to Chile's National Office of Emergencies and Information (ONEMI).
Some 120,000 Adventist church members worship in 600 churches and 260 organized groups throughout the country.
