Maranatha Volunteers International is shipping the first container of 20 structures to be used as temporary housing in Haiti following last month’s earthquake. This is the first shipment of what will be 200 housing structures for quake victims.
The structures are based on Maranatha’s One-Day Church, a quickly and easily constructed building that will be complete with walls, windows and doors for displaced Haitians. Darrell Hardy, vice president for Maranatha in Latin America, is on his way to Haiti to organize the project.
The 7.0-magnitude quake that hit Port-au-Prince Jan. 12 left nearly 1 million displaced and killed tens of thousands. Nearly 600 Seventh-day Adventist church members died and 27,000 have gathered in makeshift refugee centers at church properties. Some 335,000 Adventists worship in 470 churches throughout Haiti. Before the earthquake, 100,000 lived in Port-au-Prince.
Donations are still needed to provide the 200 shelters. A recent bill allows donors to write off their donations toward Haiti relief efforts for 2009 or 2010. Donations must be made between Jan. 11 and March 1, 2010 to be claimed on your 2009 taxes.
